GROWING THE CUP: Inagural qualifiying round
The Minnesota Super Cup's vision of fostering a vibrant and inclusive soccer community took an exciting step forward this spring with the debut of its inaugural Qualifying Round. Introduced in the tournament's third year, this new stage aims to provide an opportunity for exemplary regional clubs to compete for a coveted spot in the premier pre-professional competition.
The first year of the Qualifying Round featured spirited competition among three ambitious teams, including 18x26 Academy from Minneapolis and Spam FC representing St. Louis Park. Notably, the qualifiers also welcomed Thunder Bay Chill from Thunder Bay, Ontario, highlighting the Super Cup's commitment to reaching beyond state lines and offering a platform for top regional talent.
This invitational Qualifying Round was open to select regional clubs recognized for their exemplary conduct both on and off the field. The inclusion of teams like Thunder Bay Chill underscores the Minnesota Super Cup's dedication to providing additional clubs the opportunity to compete in the premier pre-professional tournament within the region, fostering a higher level of competition and broader connections within the soccer community.
Organizers have expressed their enthusiasm for the successful launch of the Qualifying Round and the participation of esteemed clubs like 18x26 Academy, Spam FC, and Thunder Bay Chill. This initiative promises to strengthen the regional soccer ecosystem and further enrich the Minnesota Super Cup experience for players, clubs, and fans alike. The main Minnesota Super Cup tournament is scheduled to kick off May 17, with the qualifying team ready to bring their competitive spirit to the forefront.
CLUBS
“For players, it’s a platform. For fans, it’s a vibe. And for the Minnesota football community—it’s a statement.”
Why the Minnesota Super Cup...
By a player, fan, and voice from the touchline
As someone who's played at this level, stood on the touchline, and cheered from the stands, I can say this confidently—the Minnesota Super Cup is one of the best things to happen to our local soccer scene in years.
It’s not just another trophy. It’s a proving ground. A chance for clubs from all corners of Minnesota—and beyond—to step up, go head-to-head, and show what they’re made of. USL2 sides, NPSL regulars, UPSL grafters, academy teams… all of them thrown into the same pot. It creates matchups you’d never see otherwise. And it. Is. Magic.
The Cup brings proper knockout drama to our backyard. One moment it’s a chilled evening in Stillwater or Duluth, next it’s a full-blooded derby with players laying it all on the line. And for supporters? It’s a chance to see their local lads play under real pressure, in games that mean something.
For players, it’s a platform. For fans, it’s a vibe. And for the Minnesota soccer community—it’s a statement. We’ve got serious talent here. Passion, tradition, and clubs building something real. The Super Cup gives that a spotlight.
And we’re only just getting started...
